If you like... Quiet forest cycles, countryside.
Highlight... Singletrack descent from the Quarry
Newcastleton
is a forest full of wildlife and views. Seemingly an odd choice for a
Stane, it is a venue for your first waymarked trail experience. If you
want to get away from the crowds and experience tranquility whilst
riding technical mountain biking trails, Newcastleton is only 30
minutes drive from the English border. The drive to Newcastleton,
especially from the north, sets you up for your experience - it is
quiet, twisting and scenic.
The trailhead is within riding distance of the town of Newcastleton,
where you can find all the facilities you need. On site, it is a case
of getting on your bike and getting going. The short runs at
Newcastleton are often used as 'laps' by fitter riders, so by your next lap you will know what is coming around the corner. The Red run's
singletrack is split up by forest road and the final section is
definitely the highlight. Ride it fast and you will be there in half an
hour! If you opt for the Blue run with the kids, take it easy and look
out for birds of prey on your forest road cycle.
There is a short Skills area near the Trail Head which allows you to try 'northshore', which local trailbuilding group 'The Trail Warriors'
have built. The most recent warrior-built northshore is truly
terrifying and for experts only. If you want to try this double-Black
Diamond graded challenge (recently invented when Black just wasn't enough!), be quick because something tells us it won't be there for too long. Don't worry if you don't
like the sound of that, there are plenty of easier options in the
Skills Loop with some fun, felled trees to ride onto and over.
