Sustrans - leading the way in promoting cycling

Sustrans

Sustrans is the UK's leading sustainable transport charity. Their vision is a world in which people can choose to travel in ways that benefit their health and the environment. Every day they are working on practical, innovative ways of dealing with the transport challenges that affect us all.

The National Cycle Network is a great success story. Nearly half of you live within a mile of it. The National Cycle Network carries over 230 million journeys each year, taking kids to school, workers to work, dogs on walks, shoppers to shops - it even helps the Royal Mail deliver your post.

Sustrans National Route 7

National Cycle Route 7 goes from Carlisle to Inverness, with branches in the seventies, in North England and Scotland. All cycling routes in Scotland are in the seventies apart from route 1.

Route: Glasgow to Carlisle via Dumfries and Glen Trool.

Distance: Map shows 219 miles of route, of which 41 are traffic-free

From Glasgow cycling along traffic free paths to the hills and pasture of Ayrshire, with views towards Arran and the Clyde coast. A notable feature is the huge Galloway Forest Park with many miles of ideal cycling paths. National Cycle Route 7 then follows a descent onto the Solway Coast and finally through farmland to Carlisle.
